a. Risk Status During Spring and Fall Frosts: Chandler walnut sapling is one of the varieties, which are least affected by late frosts of spring, as it blooms 2-3 weeks later than the local varieties. Pre-warming and late frost conditions of the region, in which the plantation shall be carried out, must be determined both referring to the past weather reports and to the experiences of the locals. Winter dormancy of Chandler trees varies from one region another, generally occurs in the middle of November. The offshoots stooled by the walnut tree that year may be damaged due to the early fall frosts that may occur in region, in which the plantation took place, at the beginning of November. Attention must be paid to irrigation and fertilization discipline in order to prevent this. Thus, early fall frosts may damage only the young offshoots, not the whole of the chandler tree. This may also affect the productivity of the following year negatively. This early frost conditions occurs in the regions having an altitude above 1100 meters generally for our country. However, there are some certain regions that have an altitude of 1200 meters and mild climate, as well as some regions having an altitude of 900 meters and harsh climate. In addition, we do not recommend plantation on the territories called as frost hole and large stream beds.
